  3. Airbnb is the social media answer to the venerable bed and breakfast. Check it out for cheap accommodation. I have never tried it but I know a lot of people who have. http://www.airbnb.com/

  5. For those who prefer the train to the bus (but not at Amtrak prices), The NJ Transit train (Northeast Corridor line) goes locally from NYC Penn Station to Trenton, then the SEPTA Commuter rail schedule aligns itself such that you wait only 10 min in Trenton to a local train to Philly (I believe Suburban Station or the stop before/after is the one to get off at - right in the smack center of Philly, no need to go all the way to the 30th st station). I've done this before - about 2 1/2 hours, but be patient, it's not an express train. I may come down this way on Thurs AM.

  6. As per the less expensive train route from NY Penn Station to Philly Center City: Here is the link:

When you select Philadelphia as your destination, click on 30th St Station. This is the local (2 1/2 hr) train that costs less than $16 each way. You would change trains at Trenton, but the SEPTA connection is never more than a 10-min wait. When you purchase the tickets in NYC, you actually would be receiving 2 tickets (1 for the NY to Trenton train, the other for the SEPTA Trenton to Philly train - but don't get off at 30 st station. Get off at I think Market East 8th St station for Convention Center).
